Dermal fillers are becoming an increasingly popular cost effective treatment for those looking to restore a naturally youthful appearance.
At Mona Goodarzi DDS in Irvine, California, we find that many patients are confused by the amount of misleading information circulating the internet regarding the outcomes of dermal filler treatment. We understand that deciding to make cosmetic enhancements to your body is a very personal and individualised process and as such, knowing the facts about this treatment is a necessity.
Below is a list of the most popular myths we have dunked for you to help you make an informed decision when it comes dermal filler treatment. During your initial consultation, Dr Mona Goodarzi will further explain each and every aspect of your dermal filler treatment to ensure you are aware of the realistic results we can achieve for you.
Myth # 1 Botox and Dermal Fillers work the same.
A complete myth! Dermal fillers are injected into the face and fill wrinkles and creases with a substance to eliminate their appearance. Botox, on the other hand, is injected into the muscle causing paralyses of wrinkles to eliminate their appearance. Dermal fillers are used to bring the volume and fullness back in the areas of the face such as lips, cheeks and the chin. They are a fast, effective and safe way to restore youthful plumpness to your face features and creases. Dermal fillers have been called liquid facelifts because they offer many of the benefits of a surgical facelift without the downtime.
Myth # 2 Lip injections from dermal filler causes ‘trout pout’
Many Hollywood celebrities have over treated their lips, which has led to the trout pout. If you attend an experienced practitioner who understands that “less is more”, then subtle lip enhancement procedures can produce very natural results. During your consultation at Mona Goodarzi, we can assess the aesthetics of your face and discuss the recommended treatment doses to ensure a natural looking outcome.
Myth # 3 Cheek injections results in ‘pillow face’
It is true that over correction with too much filler can result in an overly plumped out face. Again, we can look to such celebs as Madonna or Lindsay Lohan who have clearly gone overboard with excessive dermal filler in their cheeks. This is why it is imperative to keep in mind the symmetry of your face and the proportions to ensure a natural looking appearance. When these treatments are carried out by a properly trained practitioner with an astute eye, these outcomes can be avoided. As a general rule, it is best to under treat and add more product at a later date.
Myth # 4 – Dermal filler injections are irreversible
Treatment may only last around six months, although it can last longer depending on the area injected and your skin type.
Myth # 5 – Dermal Fillers are painful
Dermal fillers can be injected with the use of anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort. If you desire, our caring and compassionate staff can apply numbing cream, or local anaesthesia may be used to alleviate any pain or discomfort you may experience. You may experience some minor redness; however, this usually resolves within 24 – 48 hours and you can go home or straight back to work immediately after your treatment.
Restore a youthful plumpness to your skin and enhance your facial features with injectable fillers…
At Mona Goodarzi DDS in Irvine, California, our certified dermatologist offers a range of fillers including Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, and RADIESSE®. Injectable fillers have a range of applications, and can be utilized to:
- Treat wrinkles
- Restore lost facial volume
- Reduce the appearance of facial folds and creases
- Enhance the fullness of lips and cheeks
Unlike traditional amalgam fillings, our tooth colored restorations are safe and can be color matched to the exact shade of your natural tooth enamel.
The controversy about amalgam or “silver fillings”
Amalgam fillings have been used for decades to restore dental decay and cavities; however, in recent years much attention has been paid to the toxic material used to bond the amalgam together. This material, known as mercury, makes up 54% of the total makeup of amalgam, along with tin, copper and silver.
While the medical boards such as the World Health Organisation have deemed the use of amalgam as a safe solution to fill dental cavities, further studies have found that very small amounts of mercury in the form of vapour can actually be released as the amalgam filling wears. These studies also bring light to the following effects of amalgam:
- Amalgam scrap (waste left over after repairing a cavity) contains mercury and requires special handling to protect the environment;
- Amalgam can darken over time as it corrodes. While this does not affect the function of the filling, many people find it less attractive than tooth colored materials;
- Placement of amalgam requires removal of some healthy tooth;
- In rare cases, a localized, allergic reaction such as inflammation or rash may occur
With this knowledge, here at Mona Goodarzi we believe that it’s better to be safe than sorry, which is why we only use composite resin material to safely protect and guard your teeth.
Tooth colored Restorations
With the new advancements in dentistry, tooth colored restorations are now durable, versatile and naturally beautiful. Our tooth colored fillings, made from composite resin material, form healthy and durable restoration that integrate seamlessly with your natural smile. It is by far a more aesthetically attractive alternative to amalgam which also offers superior protection against dental decay. At Mona Goodarzi, our dental professionals will work with you to design a tooth colored restoration that suits your smile, budget and lifestyle.
Advantages of composite resin – durable, attractive and safe
- Durable: Composite is a strong material, providing durability in small to mid-sized restorations that withstand moderate chewing pressure. Frequency of repair or replacement is low to moderate
- Flexible: Composite can be used on either front or back teeth, in contrast to amalgam which is used only on back teeth (molars);
- Safe: composite resin contain no mercury and are 100% safe
At our Irvine practice we can craft further following tooth colored restorations in response to your unique needs and desires:
- Inlay and onlays are custom made in a specialised dental laboratory to protect your teeth from dental decay. They are a form of protection that are used when your tooth is suffering mild dental decay but not to the extent where a dental crown is required to fit over the entire tooth. The difference between an onlay and an inlay is the area of tooth that it covers; if the ceramic restoration goes over the tooth’s cusps it is considered an onlay, but if the ceramic goes into the tooth it’s called an inlay.
- Crown and Bridges are used when you are missing one or more teeth as a result of dental decay, or trauma. Crowns and bridges are custom made to fit over dental implants that offer a permanent solution to restoring missing teeth.
Remove your amalgam fillings safely and effectively at Mona Goodarzi

At your initial consultation here at Mona Goozardi in Irvine, we will perform a full mouth assessment to assess the extent of your dental decay to determine the best treatment for you. Our compassionate and caring team look forward to helping you receive the dental treatment you need and deserve.
Tooth Whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available today. It is one of the quickest, most effective ways to enhance the appearance of your smile.
Here at Mona Goodarzi DDS in Irvine, California, we understand that there a quite a number of fallacies circulating about teeth whitening treatments. As such, we feel it’s only fitting to help debunk some of the common myths here for you today.
Myth #1: Household Teeth Whitening Agents help to whiten teeth
Fruits and Vegetables act as natural teeth whitening agents which help to remove food particles and plaque from teeth, but their whitening power is miniscule and results take a long time to show.
Brushing with Olive Oil is a controversial teeth whitening agent; however, there is little evidence of noticeable whitening results.
Orange peel is an old-fashioned teeth-whitening remedy which. The white inside portion of an orange peel, called the albedo, contains a number of compounds including vitamin C, limonene, glucarate, pectin and soluble fiber. Limonene, also called d-Limonene, is a natural solvent cleaner that is extracted from the orange peel and used commercially in a wide variety of cleaning products. Unlike the fruit itself, orange peels do not contain citric acid, which can erode tooth enamel over time.
Myth #2: Teeth whitening is painful
Teeth whitening should not be painful; however, gums and teeth can be very sensitive to hydrogen peroxide. Most tooth whitening procedures increase teeth sensitivity for twenty-four hours until the teeth become remineralized by saliva. Here at Mona Goodarzi DDS, our gentle touch and experienced staff will ensure your comfort is prioritized throughout your treatment.
Myth #3: Anyone can get their teeth whitened
If your front teeth have been capped or you have crowns, teeth whitening will not work for you. A crown, which is a synthetic material, cannot be whitened. However, most tooth restorations are designed to resist stains, so often those crowns or caps will not require whitening.
Myth #4: Whitening damages your enamel
Although teeth whitening has been associated with damaging teeth enamel, a recent study by the Journal of American Dental Association concluded that teeth whitening agents do not increase the susceptibility of wear on tooth enamel. However, those products sold over the counter are not always ADA approved and can therefore be a risk to your health and enamel. By seeking a professional treatment here at Mona Goodarzi DDS you can rest assured knowing that we use safe effective products.
Myth #5: Only dentists can perform teeth whitening procedures
You can now get your teeth whitened at special kiosks within shopping malls. However, the technicians who perform the procedure are not dentists, nor are they medical experts. Teeth whitening technicians are not allowed to put their fingers in your mouth and must use “trays” that you insert into your mouth yourself. We recommend seeing a professional here at Mona Goodarzi DDS for safe and effective treatment.

Do you suffer from dental anxiety? Put your worries aside with sedation dentistry
Anxiety about dental care can cause patients to put off seeking the care they want and need, exacerbating oral health care issues. At Mona Goodarzi DDS’s, various sedation options are available, from light sedation to more heavy forms of sedation.
What is dental anxiety?
Despite advances of technology that have made dental treatments virtually pain-free, dental anxiety still affects millions of patients every year. In fact, the National Institute of Health reports that half of all Americans avoid the dentist, with fear being the number one reason. For some patients, a sedative may be needed to put their minds at ease during the procedure.
Different types of sedation…
At Mona Goodarzi DDS’s in Irvine, California, our Board Certified Anesthesiologist Dr Alikhani is able to perform and monitor deeper states of sedation, ensuring you are in good hands through the entire dental treatment process.
- Adult oral conscious sedation – Oral sedation is a moderate form of sedation, and usually comes in the form of a pill taken an hour before your dental procedure. You will still be able to respond to your dentist, but you may feel sleepy during the procedure. If you receive oral conscious sedation, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the procedure.
- Inhalation nitrous oxide sedation – nitrous oxide was discovered by New York dentist Horace Wells in 1844, and has been used as a moderate form of sedative ever since. In modern use nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen, and is affectionately known as “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is used by dentists millions of times annually to calm anxious patients, and patients are much less likely to experience anxiety when sedated by nitrous oxide. You remain alert and can still hear, see and respond to your dentist, and you might experience a tingling feeling or a sense of wellbeing. Once you stop inhaling the solution, the effects will stop.
- Intra-venous conscious sedation – intra-venous sedation is a moderate form of sedative, and is similar to oral conscious sedation. However, because it is administered intra-venously, it produces effects sooner than oral sedation does. It can also be adjusted during the procedure.
- General anesthesia – general anesthesia is a deep form of sedation and must be administered by an anesthesiologist. General anesthesia puts you to sleep, and may increase your recovery time.
Here at Mona Goodardi DSS’s we can match the right sedative solution to your unique needs and medical history.
Tips on cutting down your dental anxiety…
Sedative dentistry isn’t always necessary, and there are many non-sedative ways you can cut down on your dental anxiety. We suggest:
- Sharing your concerns – if you’re feeling anxious about your treatment let your dentist know.
- Wearing headphones – if it’s the sound of the drill that bothers you, bring headphones so you can listen to your favorite tunes.
- Visualization – often how we imagine the dental treatment is far worse than reality. Visualizing yourself in a happy place, such as on a beach, can relax you and calm your nerves.
- Choosing a time that suits you – make your appointment at a time when you’re less likely to be rushed or under pressure.
Stop letting your anxiety get in the way of you receiving the dental treatment you want and need. At Mona Goodardi DSS’s in Irvine, California, you can rest assured knowing that we use the most innovative technology and deliver the most advanced dental treatments available.

Oral health and comprehensive cosmetic smile evaluations can help determine the best treatment for your dental needs…
With a vast amount of information at our fingertips ‘googleing’ and self-diagnosing is often the preferred method of treating ourselves when we have medical, dental or otherwise discomfort on our body. This however can be extremely misleading and may leave you even more confused than when you started. If you are experiencing any dental distress or have gone a significant period of time without a general checkup, your best option is to organize an appointment with your dentist to revieve a professional assessment of your mouth to determine your oral health. At Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S in Irvine, California, we provide oral health and cosmetic smile evaluations to ensure you have a better understanding of your mouth and the required treatments to gain or maintain your smile.
1# Oral health problems can affect not only your mouth but your body as a whole
Recent studies have shown that oral health problems are strongly connected to the health of your body as a whole. This holistic approach to dentistry looks at patient’s oral health in the context of their entire body. At Dr. Mona Goodarzi’s dental office we offer the following examinations to help determine your overall health and how we can treat your mouth to best suit your body:
- Comprehensive Oral Exams
- Intra and Extra Oral Radiology
- Oral Cancer Screening
- TMJ and Oro-facial Pain Evaluation
- Bite Engineering and Occlusal analysis
2# Be proactive and tackle the problem before it occurs
Would you like to solve a problem before it even happened? Oral health examinations can predetermine problems inside your mouth and work towards treating them. Only dentists have the instruments and training to thoroughly clean plaque and other bacteria from your teeth. Plaque buildup on your teeth is loaded with numerous kinds of bacteria, if left untreated, the bacterial toxins released by certain bacteria and byproducts of the infection can begin to weaken your bone and teeth. The bone will begin to recede under the gums, leaving more area for the bacteria to infect the area. If you have bad breath and bleeding when you brush or floss, you may have a dental pocket, which means you can’t remove the infected area yourself because the pocket can’t be reached. Here at Dr. Mona Goodarzi’s dental clinic we can do an oral assessment to determine the state of your oral hygiene and recommend the best treatment for you. We suggest that all of our patients visit our Irvine based practice every six months for an oral health check-up and professional clean for best results.
3# An assessment determines the best treatment for your individual mouth
Whether you are approaching a dentist or a regular oral health examination or something much more specific with a cosmetic dental examination, it’s best to leave it to the professionals who can determine the most appropriate and effective treatment for you. At Dr. Mona Goodarzi’s dental clinic we tailor a specific dental treatment to each patient to meet their individual needs and to best suit their oral health. Treatment options at Dr. Mona Goodarzi’s dental clinic range from restorative procedures such as; implants, root canal therapy and dentures to cosmetic treatments such as; veneers, teeth whitening and Invisalign solutions. After an oral or cosmetic assessment we will determine the best treatment for your mouth and your smile.
At Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S in Irvine, California we pride ourselves on our relationships with our patients and we work with each individual on the best treatment for them. An oral health examination is important to your overall health, in preventing future dental problems and will help determine the most appropriate treatment for you. We recommend you refrain from stressing yourself out with internet self- diagnosis and leave it to the professionals with simple oral health assessment!
A smile is an incredible asset to have at any age and it can greatly influence how we are perceived and how we feel on a daily basis…
Everyone has the ability to smile from the moment they are born, from then on the smile has the ability to persuade, enlighten and encourage. It evokes a sense of health and wellbeing, personality, warmth, satisfaction and attractiveness. Smiles are contagious and our ability to smile can make a difference between a great day and a dismal day. When we find a reason not to smile it can greatly affect our health and self-esteem. Everyone deserves to have something to smile about, so if you are in a position where you are less than happy with the appearance of your smile then why not consider cosmetic dentistry to turn that frown upside down. Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S in Irvine, California, has a highly skilled focus on cosmetic dental treatment, designed to enhance any smile that needs uplifting.
Ask yourself – ‘Am I happy with my smile?’
There are many reasons why some people might choose to receive cosmetic dental intervention, however it is important to ask yourself just what it is about your smile that makes you consider cosmetic treatment. Dr. Mona Goodarzi finds that many of the issues that patients are concerned about are:
- Discoloration of the teeth
- Chips, cracks, wear and tear
- Gummy smile
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
If you have said yes to any of these issues why not consider one of the following cosmetic treatments:
To straighten your teeth try an Invisalign treatment plan… Invisalign is a virtually ‘invisible’ orthodontic treatment that subtly shifts your teeth into a corrected position. A similar effect to braces, Invisalign uses plastic aligners to move your teeth without the need for brackets or wires.
For visible cracks and chips why not consider veneers… it might be a small crack or a huge chip, yet either way veneers are perfect for making your smile seem whole again. Veneers are tiny sheets of porcelain that slip over the tooth. The veneer is custom made to look exactly like your real tooth and will blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
Eliminate stains with our comprehensive tooth whitening treatment… Don’t waste your money on store bought treatments and get your teeth professionally whitened by a highly trained professional.
Transform that gummy smile… gums are an essential element to a lovely smile, although sometimes gums can become a little overbearing. Gum disease, infection and genetics can cause the gums to swell and make your smile appear overly gummy. With laser contouring we can shape your gums safely and effectively to your own specifications.
If you are unsure of how to improve your smile Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S offers comprehensive cosmetic smile evaluations, helping patients form a completely custom-made dental plan to suit their unique needs…
Customize your very own cosmetic treatment with the help of Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S, a highly trained professional who stays up to date on all the latest technologies and trends in cosmetic and general dentistry. By tailoring treatments to suit your needs you can address your desires, concerns and outcomes to ensure that all of your requirements are being considered during the initial treatment consultation. Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S will check your oral health and function, palpate your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), address your occlusion (bite) and examine your oral and facial esthetic. Dr. Mona Goodarzi D.D.S will then work with you and our board certified dermatologist Dr. Heidi Goodarzi to tailor a comprehensive oral and facial cosmetic plan.
